Lawrence Family History? 3 Years, 10 Months ago
|
|
|
Hello all in the lovely Pelhams!
Does anyone know of the Lawrence family history around the Pelhams? My mother was a Lawrence (still have an uncle in F Pelham), and would be grateful of any info!
I have traced that they live in Washall Green (a long time back, and were farm hands mainly.
Thanks in advance if you can help.
Regards,
Simon

I remember Hubert Lawrence who lived with his sister at Weasle Cottage, Washall Green. He was a batchelor who worked on the farm here all his life apart from his time in the army in World War 1 and as a POW after his capture on the Somme.
There were also Lawrences at Black Hall Farm (now destroyed). I was recently told that one of them, Stan I think, Had been cheated out of the Victoria Cross which he deserved. I know no futher details such as which war, I suspect WW1, nor which regiment.
Does anybody know anything more?
Ted

My Lawrences hail from Great Hormead. Over the years I have made several attempts to connect all the Lawrences from the local villages, FP, Braughing etc but without a great deal of success. There is a theory that all these Lawrences go back to Randall Lawrence and perhaps St Albans but in my mind there is not enough data available to prove this one way or the other.

My researches lead me to believe that Randall Lawrence of St Albans b 1652 d 1736 did indeed bring his Wife Mary and Children to live in the Area sometime in the 1670's or at latest 1685, when his son James was baptised in Great Hormead.
Randall came from a family of Chandlers who married into some money. His Great Grandfather, my 11x G. Grandad, John Lawrence b1562 d 1609 had married Elizabeth Bull of Benwick Hall, on the banks of the River Beane at Stapleford who owned many properties around Herts, some of which were part of Elizabeths Dowry(she only received £5 in the Will that her father, Richard, left).
The properties were made over in legal manner preceding the marriage on 9th November 1579. It is possible that lands in 'Burnt Pelham' were made over, as we know that Elizabeths brother Henry held the Manor of Brent Pelham in partnership with his cousin Edward Cason after Richard Bulls death.
I hope this helps to gain an understanding of how the Lawrences came to be in the Pelhams/Hormeads area
